'Thanks for serving OUR country!

I was "mostly" Air Force from '70-02...with covert spooky dark ops mixed in for good measure and "character building"... (1 out of 2 ain't bad!?)
'Still recovering from 13,000+ flt hrs in the pointy end under all metal wings...
'Slightly handicapped, moderately decorated, veteran with ISSUES!

Those other guyz would say... "OOOOOOO-rah!"
I'd say... "EEEEEEEE-yikes!?"

an early Orvus AK-47 weight...

Thanks Frank for the thread. It kiinda brings back memories, mostly good. USAF 59-68. Lots of good times, and a maturing experience. After high school I was "too smart" to continue my education. After basic training, I realized I wasn't as smart as I thought. Short story, the Air Force gave me a BS degree, and later with the GI Bill, a masters. As a veteran, I'm deeply indebted for the privilgege to serve and the opportunities afforded.

Thanks guys

Its great hearing all your stories ..... lets keep this thread going a few more days even though Veterans Day is over.... hope some others jump in..

John that was a great tribute to your dad....thanks for the photos etc... and thanks to the others.... some pretty interesting adventures eh ?

Jim I guess I was sort of like you .... at 17 out of high school not sure what to do and I enlisted... never regretted a day.... I still have contact with fellow soldiers and civilians from my days in Eritrea...... what an eye opening experience it was for a kid...

Stay well

When I lived in Seattle I worked with a grumpy, ornery man who had a chip on his shoulder. I'm no mind reader but I had a suspicion it was a remnant of tough times in 'Nam.

One Veterans Day, I took him out to lunch. No one else would come. I bought lunch and asked him about his tour of duty. I can honestly say I get choked up right now thinking about the stories he shared with me that day. Getting shot down in a copter, the mangled rotors' momentum spinning the fuselage around like a top on the way down to a deep jungle crash, and worse.

In subsequent years I got almost the whole office to take out the vets on Veterans Day. Strong friendships emerged as a result of a little bit of understanding.
