Hungry Pickerel 9/17/08

Took the boat out on the pond tonight for what was probably the last after-work trip of the year. There were some hungry pickerel in the shallows and a few of them managed to catch the fly before I was able to pull it away . I love the way they attack, but if I see that it's a pickerel I try to pull the fly away before they can get it because they tend to engulf the fly and are difficult to unhook. This often results in some comical second (and more) efforts to get the fly, which is even more fun than actually catching the fish .

The farther you can cast, the easier it is for a fish to take you into your backing. I seldom see my backing . . .

Pretty soon there won't be enough daylight left after work to make a fishing trip worth the effort for ponds. Glad to hear that you're getting some action in before it's too late.
