Matane C&R?

In an earlier post on this forum, there was speculation on the Matane going C&R on 8/15. Any update on this?

Also, any info on the return #s on the Cap Chat, Ste Anne and Madeleine?

Hi Rich,

The word (rumor) now is that the Matane will continue its one fish per day kill limit. Over the past week many fish have entered with the proportion of adult to grilse being better......approx 50%. Even if they don't get the exact numbers they want the rumor is that they will not close it because of the business generated by fisherman in this area.

I hooked and played a big fish yesterday. She was on for about 20 minutes. She won. She put on a great show and made my day. She won......fair and square and deserved to live. I must be getting older because in the old days I would have been very upset. Instead, I felt great. All alone in a very difficult pool that not too many people like to fish due to its difficult wading and access.......but a great pool at that.

I don't have the stats on the other rivers. A friend of mine from here is fishing the Madeline right now. I should here something when he returns to St Rene.

I've been watching the Matane returns and the water level sites with great envy. In the old days I would have been in my truck en route to the rivers after the bumps of water like you've gotten recently. But I'll have to wait a couple of weeks...hope the conditions hold up.

Responsibility is highly overrated.

Ste Anne has is best midseason count for a while, and currently have a big run of grilse.

What I heard about Cap Chat, they had very few fish at the mid season count, but it seems they had an interesting run last week.

Matane...Matane is Matane, and this year still surprise many. After a slow beggining, they now have more than 925 MSW, and around 2500 total. They are on the way for a season in the 3300-3400 range. Probably around 1100 MSW at the end, wich should let at least more than 800 for spawn, around 130-135% of the conservation level as usual like most of the last 20 years. And the grilse count allow to project a terrific season for 2009...

Red Vent Syndrome and Anisakis Simplex worms have shown up on Matane fish
RVS has also shown up on the Bonnie,Gouffre and a few other rivers .

Being clueless on RVS, I did some quick research:

Unless there is more current data, it appears that, aside from being unsightly, there is no effect on the overall health or spawning capability of the salmon.

Since I'll be fishing the Matane and other Gaspe rivers beginning this weekend, I was concerned about the likelihood of transmitting the syndrome to other rivers via my waders, as can occur with didymo and zebra mussels. The good news is that the Anisakis parasite, which causes RVS, cannot be transmitted in fresh water.

Nonetheless, I've caught numerous salmon over the years with assorted nasty bite marks and lesions. It's never a pleasant sight and certainly detracts from the experience of catching this beautiful fish. Let's hope that this latest assault on Salar does not spread.

There might be a health problem if the fish is cold smoked or eaten raw, gravad lax.
