Minnesota Pike and Bass

I just spent a week in Ottertail County Minnesota flyfishing for pike bass and panfish. Cold water temps had the bass just beginning to spawn, poppers and dahlbergs were working right up against reed shorelines. Pike fishing was fast and furious, but the average fish was on the small side, most were taken on tarpon style streamers. There were a few takes and misses by larger fish, but the largest landed pike on fly was sub 30". The colder than usual water had panfish in a prespawn skiddish doldrum. We were able to locate schools by sighting staging fish on the outside weededges and marking schools on a hand held gps. We returned to these spots after letting the fish cool down from being spooked by the boat earlier and hammered foot long crappie with slow sinking wooley buggers.

The major lesson of the trip was that it is possible to get tendenitis in your stripping hand after a week of fan casting for toothies, and it also is still possible to flyfish with a splint on said stripping hand...
