Shilton Reels

Does anyone have first hand experience with these reels. I have googled them and they look like quality reels. I have chance to buy an SL5 and a SL6 at nice price.

Shilton might be the best kept secret in the fly reel field today. They are superbly made, and easily comparable to Tibor and Abel and at significantly lower prices. I've landed tarpon, crevalle jack, and false albacore on my SL7. They are one of many fine reel brands made in South Africa and imported into the US.

Thanks JR.
I picked one up and gave it a few spins and checked the drag and was impressed. About the only thing I didn't like was the click when reeling and the drag being silent but I can live with that if its a quality reel. Are they difficult to change from right to left hand retrieve?

You need the right tool to get at the pawls inside. It's basically a Phillip's head, but none of the ones I owned fit it correctly. The tapers of the "blades" were not what I have on the screwdrivers in my toolkit. With the right tool, it's really a pretty easy conversion.

I have a Shilton SL6. It is a great reel with a super brake system. I think it is on par with a Tibor or Abel.
The only criticism that I have is the click when reeling in is very loud. I say that it sounds like a duck quacking. In fact because of that I have christened the reel "the duck".

You can hear the reel on this video that Juro took in Culebra a few weeks ago.

Pete,
Thanks, I noticed the "quack" too. Its the only thing that I do not like about the reels but I can live with that knowing its a good reel.

Hi I have an SL 7 and a CL 6 I am very pleased with them and would recomend them to anyone, changing from left to right and vice versa is not an issue, but ofcourse I won't recomend it at the waterside but then again who would do it there ? you could pay more but I you wont get much more. If one neglet to rins the SL 7 reguraly (each day after use) salt build-up will get the dogs(clickers that makes like a duck ) stuck.
