Jim, The use of the back hackle is very nice. Bob Benson , the old owner of Fishing The Cape used to tie sand eels with that hackle, flash and a built up head as his exclusive sand eel fly. I used it before I had exclusively used Harry's Rat's Ass... then moved to the Deep eel...but they all work. I used to have a fly box which was filled with Harry's Rat's Ass. When I met Juro years ago at the Light along with his son (a little boy then ) his fly box had a forth fly which I will not mention and that box was filled with only those. That back hackle is very effective even without attempting to imitate a Mack. I will tie up a few of Bob Benson's Sand eel and post it here.
