Special Thank You

Received an e-mail yesterday from Al_ D the Clavemeister, regarding a generous donation to CCA of Boston. The funds were donated on behalf of the participants of the RhodyClave two weekends ago.

As you all know, CCA represents our fisherman's position on the state and welfare of our fish stock and marine ecosystems. Their voice will remain strong only through participation, education, and funding. RhodyClave was a great gathering of friends and fishers. Now with this gesture, puts the final exclamation point on RodyClave 2000. Thanks for your generosity and kindness.

RE:Special Thank You

Well, I sure goofed on this one. I sent the donated gas money to CCA all right, but I made the check out to CCA RI. Problem is there is no CCA chapter in Rhode Island. Duh!! I guess I ought to read my membership literature a little more closely. Hey, maybe our contribution will tip the scales and they'll open one up

I really can't believe with all the coast line in RI that they haven't done so already. Ray, is there a reason you know of why they aren't active down there?

RE:Special Thank You

Al,

My guess is that "Save the Bay" is such an active political and activists force in Rhode Island that CCA wasn't needed. Save the Bay goes back at least 20 years or more. Probably before CCA. They don't come under any national umbrella organization. They have been very effective controlling shore development, organic pollution, hazardous waste, and dredge dumping.

Other watchdogs is a group of angler called RI Saltwater Anglers that have been a strong voice in state government. They have gotten area sportsman together in numbers and now chair positions on many of our marine fisheries boards. Up till then, the rec fisherman had no say about our fisheries. The commissions were salted with commercial man.

Than we have URI school of Oceanography. Much of their marine studies enter into the equation when laws or limits are applied.

So Rhode Island now is well taken care of. There's much improvement the last ten years.
