New Caledonia

Thought I woould post some thoughts on New Caledonia having just spent 10 days in the boatpass region with Peter Morse and Charles Rangeley-Wilson.

New Caledonia (South west pacific for those who have never heard of it) has always been rumoured to have big bonefish. I have previously fished the southern regions and saw very few bonefish, although I did land a 31 incher and that was enough to draw me back to the more remote region to the North. This place is an absoulutely stunning big bonefish fishery. The whole area is relatively unexplored and we only scratched the surface of the more accessible bonefish flats. It is not a numbers fishery like christmas island or the seychelles but each encounter you have with the big bones of NC is special. The weather conditions we experienced made life tough at times but we still had plenty of shots at fish each day. The bonefishing was so enthralling that we didn't even bother to pick up the 12wt's and target the huge GT's up on the flats. Must make more time to do that next trip. There is alot of hype when it comes to bonefish weights but there are some seriously big fish swimming around in New Cal. We landed very few fish under 7lb and had half a dozen or so double figure fish and had over 30 fish between us for the week.

Cheers Pete.

The place is really untapped. The kanaks have done a great job of preserving the fish stocks in the north. Very little netting going on and they have amazing fish spotting abilities. They used to take clients out without polaroids and would be spotting fish in deep water that the clients just couldn't see. Clients didn't beleive they were actually seeing fish They were made to wear glasses so people would beleive them.

Mark, I am duly impressed not only by the quality of the fish but the spirit of adventure.
