Trophy bluegill quest

A coworker of mine and his son were out on my boat last night. We were searching for the elusive 10+ inch bluegill and anything else that would bite.

We each ended up with a handful of 8 inch bluegills, countless smaller ones, and some small bass, perch, pumpkinseed, and crappies. The wind never laid down like I would have liked, but the topwater bite was good nevertheless.

The best part of the trip was when Craig's son Nate put down his spinning rod near the end of the evening and asked to use his dad's 5 weight for a while. After managing a few roll casts, he was able to catch his first few unassisted fish on the fly ever.

Quote of the trip: "Dad, I think I'm a flyfisher now."

I was out for an hour last night and managed a real nice fat bluegill that was around 91/4" . But the prettiest fish by far is the pumpkinseeds. I caught this one while out fishing for smallmouths on Cape Cod this past Friday.

Blue gill

I think alot of us started flyfishing for bluegill. I know its how I got my boys hooked on the sport. We have a pond out here in eastern Utah that kicks out alot of 11" fish and 12" happen on occasion. World class fish for the West. I've only had 4 fish mounted in my life and 1 is a 12 1/2" Gill.

I'm not sure how to post pics here but I'll try this is one of my boys with an average gill for this lake(about 10"). Sorry about the spinningrodin the back ground.

Man that looks like fun I cannot wait till my granddaughter is old enough to fly cast. At two she can throw her Barbie Zebco at her little sister with uncanny accuracy. Her Dad & I are taking her fishing on the 4th for an hour or so & try to get some sunnies
