Did a day trip out of New Orleans with EZ Fly guide service to chase some redfish. Weather was marginal, cloudy all day and then the winds went from 10 mph to 25 about noon and it was time to call it. Redfish on the fly is a lot of fun. We sight fished some, but got forced to mainly blind cast to points. Fished in about 2 foot of water the whole time and could see the fish wake coming at the spoonfly for a couple of feet on most hookups. The redfish in this area are much more aggressive than the east coast of Florida and the Texas coast - if you miss you throw it back to it and they take it the second time. The area was about a 40 minute car ride from the New Orleans airport and a 5 minute boat run to where we fished. In the fall, they switch to the Biloxi Marsh area where the 30 - 40 lbers come in. Caught 6 redfish (all about 3 to 6 lbs) and 1 sheepshead and used spoon flies all morning. Took two rods with SA bonefish and RIO bonefish line and that is too much work redfishing. The guide had a reel strung with Wulff bass line (that or Wulff triangle taper) is what you need for redfish - working too hard to enough bonefish taper line outside the guides to load up the rod whereas the Wulff took one backcast and shoot.
