Season Starter, Jamaica Bay

Fished Jamaica Bay, LI with Peter McCarthy and Capt. Danny Reich of One More Cast Charters.
Pleasant Spring day on the water with lots of fish to be caught. Massive schools of adult bunker with Bass and big blues around in good numbers.
Peter and I probable caught between 60 to 80 fish on the fly with maybe a dozen keeper size mixed in. Lost count after the first couple hours...Arms are sore today! My first time to this unique fishery .... almost got used to the constant airplane buzz & activity at Kennedy Aiport! :bang: . Urban fishing at it's best!
Cows are not there yet .... but the number of scrappy fish is very incouraging.
Thanks Danny for a great day OTW!

Have they lightened up on the access to that area? I remember a year or two ago they lost a lot of access due to 9/11

It is interesting.... and a little spooky.
They have some marker bouys off the airport. You are to fish outside of them. There are no big signs or warnings ...... but if you go inside the bouys (closer to the airport) within 5-10 minutes either a helicopter or a patrol boat will show up and escort your boat outside the marker. If one were to persist in going inside, your boat will be boarded, searched and a ticket issued. We saw this numerous times during the day. They are still all business!
interesting contrast to fishing Buzzards Bay or Vineyard Sound!

Nice going Jim

I was out there with a hundred or so Kayak fishermen this past week-end. The main tournament got blown out Sunday but guys who hit the water early on Friday and Saturday did very well including some impressive "Tiderunner" Weakfish up to 35 inches.

All I could manage was a couple of snagged adult menhaden who quickly lost their tails to ravenous bluefish.

One day I will hit J'Bay at the right time!

For access, over at Floyd Bennet field, Brooklyn, a "Gateway" pass can be purchased that provides overnight parking and cartop access. The pass is also good for Sandy Hook NJ and Breezy Point.

We had they same experience w/ the bunker. We couldn't get those blues to hit a fly much..... but when we snagged a bunker .... the blues (and big ones too) would tear the bunker up like hungry Hyenas! We even tried casting a fly next to the poor snagged bunker (chum ) but no luck. I would bet some of those blues were mid teens. Pretty cool to see them around..... perhaps less good fortune for the bunker!

Nice shots and fish. One of these years I'm going to make it down. So much water so little time. FishHawk

Adrian,

I was there this past weekend too, with my crew from Delaware Valley Kayak Fishing. One of our members came up with a 37.5" Weakfish. I got a lot of nice blues and a 33" Stripah. Great place to fish, and I didn't really care about the tournament getting blown out. I got to fish all day Friday and Saturday and the fee was for a good cause. Besides, the place was like a giant block party Friday and Saturday. A lot of fun.
