Keys report end of April 2007

I fished out of Islamorada, setting off every morning from the Lorelei.
I fished with Jeff Johnson and in fact met a lot of my old friends (guides) there.

Everone said that the fishing was really tough and had been for a few weeks.
There were apparently hardly any bonefish around and it was very windy for tarpon.

The first few days I concentrated on snook and reds just off Flamingo and managed to catch a few nice fish.

One day it was flat calm and the tarpon seemed to appear everywhere. I managed to jump one fish of about 50lbs and blindcasting I had another hookup to find that it was a seatrout of about 32 inches.
On arriving back at the dock it seemed that no one had caught any fish.

On my last day we looked for tarpon on both Oceanside and Bayside and in the afternoon we managed to find a spot where the fish were moving.

We had numerous shots at fish coming straight towards us but the all turned away on seeing the fly. It was starting to get very frustrating as we tried most flies in the box with the same result. Suddenly when my guide was shouting at me for casting to the lead fish in the pod, it took and after about half an hour or so we had a 130lb tarpon by the side of the boat. I didn't get any photos as we broke him off.

It appeared that the tarpon migration was underway but I had to go home.
That evening Jeff's wife made a small dinner party. Among the guests were Dale Perez, Bruce Stagg, Craig Brewer and Gary Ellis. We drank far too much wine despite the fact that a couple of the guides had to guide some of the George Bush party the next day.

It was great to met old friends that I had not seen for a few years but the fishing is not as good as in some other places I have fished recently.

The fishing in general this year is suffering from bad weather. I don't know what anyone else thinks.

Pete
A guide friend of mine in Key West called me a few weeks ago and said the fishing was very poor due to weather.

Well, at least they can't blame me for the bad weather this year - it blew like the blazes when I was down there in May a couple of years back. Happened so many times on different trips I was begining to get a complex

Great report as always Pete.
