backwater pike 5/5/07

Dropped the boat in the river and slowly made my way upstream to a secluded backwater. The main river was fairly clear and the level had dropped but the current was still very strong so it was slow going with the electric motor. I even had to assist with the oars in a few spots. When I finally got to the backwater I started casting a red/white fishair fly and soon spooked a large pike. The boat drifted right up to it but I didn't see it until I was right on top of it. Its back was at least 4" wide . I soon hooked a slightly smaller pike and lost it when it swam through some submerged branches and left my fly on a stick. A while later I hooked another pike that also wrapped the line on a sumberged branch and worked its way off the hook. Here's what the fly looked like when I retrieved it:

I did finally manage to get one all the way to the boat. The smallest one, of course (~22").

It seems like the pike fishing is picking up everywhere. Nice report.
