Question do nymphs swim???

since my fishing techniques more or less suck, I end up trying dumb stuff. But theres one thing I do that works pretty good for me in creeks: I cast a hares ear downstream, then I retrieve it like a spoon (spinning rods) or a streamer, making the nymph go by the place where I think the trout are. This actually works, but Im not sure why and Im a bit curious: Why are the trout taking the fly? might they think its a small fish or can some types of nymphs swim upstream?

Certain nymphs are very strong swimmers- Isonychia for instance ( use a zug bug instead of a hare's ear) and sulphurs. The bugs that tend to be the strongest swimmers are "burrowers" rather than clingers. Likewise, caddis as theyemerge "swim up" through the water column. Try a sparkle caddis pupae or emerger fished on the swing on a tight line and see what happens.
