Water pollutants mute smell

Fascinating (and disturbing) cover article in the Jan 27 issue of Science News

http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20070127/bob10.asp

describing how pollutants (herbicides, pesticides, copper, etc) adversely affect fish and invertebrates loss of smell to the point that salmon can't find their natal streams, lose the ability to detect predators, detect suitable partners, etc. Just 3 hours of exposure to waterborne copper reduced responses of juvenile coho to a typical alarm odor emitted by a wounded coho. In clean water, coho immediately seek refuge.

Just more evidence of the importance of controlling runoff of pollutants from industry, farming, roadways, etc.

Juro
Try it again. I just tried it twice, first time it just sort of hung, second time went right through it.
