Since there really is no rod action, length, or line weight that is best for nymphing (this despite all the hokum put out over the years about how there is such a thing), the best rod action, length, and line weight to use for nymphing is the one with the action, lengthm and line weight you prefer. That being said, there are some basic things to keep in mind when deciding which one to get: 1) size of river or stream; 2) size of flies you are going to be casting and fishing; 3) whether you are going to be fishing lakes; and 4) the type of rod action you prefer. Choosing a rod for fishing nymphs is really a matter of you personal tastes in rod action and possibly length.

For the famous eastern waters (i.e Beaverkill , Esopus, W. Branch of the Delaware, Housatonic etc) a 9' ft 5 wt with a moderate to moderate-fast action is your best bet. Great for nymphing, dries whatever. You could probably get away with an 8' 6" length rod as well. Definitely want a 5wt for these, though.

For smaller waters (i.e. Willowemoc, Croton Streams etc) you could comfortably go down to an 8'-8'6 4 wt.

Hope this helps.
