What are the dates we're looking at? Big tides mid Feb and mid March, I think.

Round Trip Fares to Nassau

I would like to go. Just let me know the dates.

I understand (perhaps incorrectly) that February fishing is less predictable due to a greater possibility of cold fronts. Of course, with this week's weather.....

Nassau to Acklins is via Bahamasair. It's about $215 roundtrip. It flies on Saturday and Wednesday. I believe I saw a post where another airline flies on Monday. Of course, there is the option of a private plane to and from Nassau.

February weather can be somewhat iffy, but not nearly as much as you might expect. It is in the southern chain of the islands, and thus, avoids most of the weather systems from the north. Wind is always present, but there are days...

Pineapple Air is flying on Mondays now, but there are several of these small airlines that start service, then stop certain routes without warning, so it is best to book with Bahamas Air IMO.

The winter weather on Acklins is much better than Andros. Many (but not all!) of the fronts, like the one this week, back up and slide north and east before getting down there. The normal fair weather winds are 15-20 knts from the ENE. If you get a dead calm day that time of year enjoy it, because the NW winds will be there the next day! During fair weather a line of clouds often forms each afternoon and hangs over the landmass of Crooked and the wider bits of Acklins causing tough sighting for a few hours. Fish Cays stay out of the clouds for the most part except during the fronts.

I would fly Bahamasair also, as Bob says. Charters to Acklins are very expensive from the states, and if you plan on taking one from Nassau, you're probably still better off with Bahamasair.

Cold fronts definitely do often stall out before they reach Acklins--but not always. If it's cloudy just spend your time on the lighter bottomed flats where it will be easier to spot the bones. If it is really cold, the darker flats warm up more quickly, so sometimes you are forced to fish them. If so, don't move quickly--go very slooow, or stay stationary and let the fish come to you. They will come surprisingly close if you stay still-sometimes only a rods length, especially if you are kneeling down, or just very short! Movement draws their attention, and walking around under poor spotting conditions means that many fish will see you first.

Realistically it's a couple-fifty to get to Nassau, then the group splits lodging for the night to take the early flight to Acklins which runs another couple-fifty. While there, another couple-fifty will get you a nice place (we can arrange) and you might spend that again if you drink a lot of kaliks. Throw a few buffer bills in there in case you eat big at the waterfront in Nassau or pick up some sovenirs, etc.

We usually leave thinking that was the best bargain trip ever, I've paid that staying on Cape Cod for the week and that's driving distance. But it's really not about the money so much for me... I love the raw unadulterated place that is Acklins which instills a sense of discovery and adventure into the journey.

(However covering for three brilliant college student kids does make that matter to me)
