Atlantic Salmon Fly of the week – Dragon

With the reopening of the Penobscot River in Maine and all the excitement it has generated I thought it might be a good idea to bring out some patterns developed for that river. This is actually a series of flies that was invented by a lady named Fran Stuart from Peterborough, New Hampshire. As the story goes the year was 1988 and the water on the Penobscot was very low and clear. Stuart first tied this fly in a tent by lantern light and got a 12 lb. salmon on it the next day.

Hook: Low water single or Wilson double.
Tag: Silver wire.
Rib: Black ostrich herl counter ribbed with silver wire.
Underbody: flat silver tinsel for green and yellow floss and flat gold tinsel for red or orange floss.
Body: Fluorescent green, yellow, orange or red floss.
Collar: Soft black.
Head: Black

Charlie,

Those tied with red, orange, purple, hot pink, and blue are pretty effective low-water steelhead flies here in the PNW provided they are tied small. Unfortunately, not many PNW steelheaders tie or fish flies in the #8-#12 size range.

Russ,

I always find it interesting, and I really shouldn’t, when I find steelheaders using Atlantic salmon flies and Atlantic salmon fisherman using steelhead flies. I will have to stick these in my steelhead box for when the water gets low.

Charlie.
