Weekend getaway needed

Hi there, new to the forum and new to the fishing in the USA. It's been a LONG time since I was actively fly fishing for trout in my native South African eastern highlands. I currently live in Chicago and I'm looking for a weekend getaway in the US, something that will put me on decent waters for Fri-Sun. Not looking for anything too exotic in terms of price but with my job, I can fly anywhere in the country so geography presents no issue. If you were me, where would you be heading? I'm looking to show up with my kit, buy some local flys, get some advice or guidance on local set-up etc. and then let loose for the day.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks

Welcome to the forum Tristan. My choice would be somewhere in the rockies given your ability to fly. Maybe some others can chime in with specifics.

Are you planning a guided or do-it-yourself? If you are thinking a guided trip, I would PM Bob Berquist, a member of this forum, and see if he has any openings. Rivers in Montana, and Yellowstone Park are fishing quite fine this time of year.

Welcome to the forum!

Are you looking to specifically target trout? Or is any river/stream species ok (i.e. salmon, steelhead, smallmouth, etc.) What about fishing for bass or other pond/lake species? Or are you only looking for streams/rivers? What size rivers do you wajnt? Something you cast from one side to the other? Something you can stand in the middle and cast to both banks? Or soemthing even bigger?
My passion for catching fish is eclipsed only by the fish's passion not to be caught.
