Patagonia Riverwalker - Sticky Rubber

Do any of you use Patagonia's boots with their sticky rubber soles? I have used felt-studed soles for a long time, and have no real reason to change, but if you hike into a lot of places to fish the felt takes a lot of wear. I have only talked to one person who uses Patagonia's sticky rubber soles and he likes them a lot, but he generally fishes clean rocky bottom rivers. Anyone use them on rivers with algae covered rocks?

Thanks,

Ray

I've fished with people who had aquastealth, which is different but perhaps similar. Unless you get studs, you are going to have a lot more trouble on algae than felt. I left them in the dust wading with my felts.

The most profound advantage Ive heard of is use in snow - felt packs on snow and rubber doesn't.

I am a huge fan of patagonia products so would imagine they have field tested to the hilt. It often takes them years to approve product ideas. Everything I own from them seems to have a sixth sense about what I am going to need, I am constantly discovering design features they thought of in anticipation of my needs!

Most likely the rubber will serve where felt will not (snow, etc) but not replace felt. Most likely you should go with rubber + studs.

Hope someone with direct experience will chime in...

I've used the aquastealth/sticky rubber in other brands (not patagonia), but I always use them with studs, and they work great. I would say that plain felt vs. plain aquastealth, the felt wins hands down, especially on the slimy rocks. I believe felt just grips rocks better than aquastealth. But if you add studs to the sticky rubber, that added traction should be all you need.
Often you can add screws from simms or chota to the bottoms and convert your non-studded aquastealths into studded aquastealths. Just make sure you have enough room in the sole so that the screws don't protrude into the bottom of your boot.
