Your off season trip plans...

Now that it's time to start thinking about what's past the fall fishing, what are some of you planning to do this winter?

I am in a financial burden period with two in college and residuals from the first still heavy. But I still have a pulse

Unfortunately I am going to abandon my coho saltchuck trip (low numbers again ) and skip our media coverage of the Tackle and Trade show this year (we'll go back next year). Spring steelhead will be contingent on frequent flyer miles and state of affairs in late winter.

So it looks like I will finish my fall with local claves (Maine, Rhody,Boneclave) which I can drive to and crash in the truck if need be, but typically pitching a tent or splitting a room - budget angling at it's best.

Then this first annual virgin poon exploratory using my frequent flyer miles and a sparse dispensation of american dollars in this US territory rich with familiar amenities. Incredible bang for the buck.

From there I will have to buckle down until Acklins, my annual Xmas / birthday present which will get me through the winter until the spring clave of 2007 (with a tan )

What are folks planning this fourth fishing season?

Jigging for Grouper with some old Canal friends in December on the East Coast of Florida after I catch my December Striper

One day pooning in San Juan prior to a cruise in January

Waiting for some phone calls from some fishing acquaintances in Islamorada and Key West.

Suffering from some financial constraints myself, we (GF and I) plan to mooch some lodging in my parents condo on Duck Key and fish for whatever will chase a fly. May hook up with a couple we met on a booze cruise this summer and head out for some bluewater fishing out of Key West.

Or I may just freeze my ass off fishing winter steelhead and remodel my kitchen this winter.

Reality can suck, but atleast there are fish to be caught.

Local cape holes through the fall. Joining basser on the cruise but I'm going to pass on the poon experience. Got to reserve the vacation day for the Acklins travel day, plus cash flow is currently strapped (note to Juro, the kids exit from college isn't the end of it, plan accordingly).

Fred -

Good to hear you are a definite for Acklins, I enjoyed discovering the southernmost creek with you that day; we earned it.

As far as the comment above, I just realized we don't have a "cry" smiley...

Alternating between north shore/south shore/cape and brook trout and salmon trips locally until end of October. Harker's Island for a week in November, Eleuthera again sometime in the winter. Fortunately for me, the trout and salmon are an easy drive from here. Friends with houses and boats for the striper/tuna trips and my brother lives on Harker's. So really the only one involving any serious expense is Eleuthera.

Three words...QUACK....HONK....BOOM!!! Hopefully a guided outing or two with Chris Simms for sea ducks on the Cape late Oct/early Nov.
As for fishing- usual 1 week DIY while visiting the folks at their time share on Longboat Key in FL in March.

FlyDoc- I spend a week on Siesta Key every April and fish quite a bit down there- have spent the last few years really targeting (with some success) big jacks- Like 20 lbs and up from the beach. Do you see them that on Longboat?

TG- fish mainly the bayside flats (wading) on the east side and the bridge channel at the north end of Longboat- not much luck so far- the occasional seatrout. May have to try targetting jacks in the surf like you mentioned- if I could only fit my Atlantis 11/12 weight surftamer into my beat up old suitcase....
Tie-Dye- by steel, do you mean steel shot, or stainless steel hooks (tying)?

20# jacks in the surf? Flydoc, I probably have a metal tube that fits in if you want to ship it to the folks deliv. confirmation / insured. I just want to hear the story and see the pics when you get back. Tie some 1" diam foamhead poppers with some prism tape and big eyes under a coat of epoxy, some trailing flashy hair and stuff and hang on.

clarification

in my life there are two kinds of steel. stainless #10 blade for celiotomy and holy chrome steelhead of great lakes and BC. i was referring to the latter euphamism. the former just pays for the latter. Classic homonym of what im passionate about.
