Steelhead Fly of the week Thor

This fly is was named after Walt Thorsen who, according to the story, took five fish on it the first day he used it in the Eel river. Also, according to the story, all the fish put together did not weigh over six pounds. Jim Pray of Eureka, California invented the fly in 1936. It is said that Pray was looking for a fly that had the same color scheme as the Royal Coachman and this is what he came up with.

Hook: Up eye salmon hook.
Tail: Orange hackle barbs.
Body: Red chenille.
Collar: Brown hackle.
Wing: White deer hair or polar bear.

Charlie,

I have a very good friend who happens to live in Fortuna, CA, which has the Eel River flowing through it.

Anyway, THOR tied with a dubbed body, oval gold rib, gold tag, and white wing with a few strands of Pearl Krystal Flash in the middle of it (the wing is tied on in two parts, after the first part is tied in, the hackle is wound and the Krystal Flash added, then the second or top part is tied in last) is claimed by Manuel to be one of the best flies he has ever used for half-pounders in the Eel and Klamath Rivers, which he had been fishing for over 50 years.
