Loop Evotech CLW 8/12 reel

Does anyone have one or ever used it. I know the whole story of Loop and Danielsson, how the split, make the same reels, and how Danielsson's are cheaper. Danielsson doesn't seem to make one like this one though, as the spool and frame are all composite. Anyway, I've been looking at one, (there not that expensive, you can find them for about $150), and wondering how it would do on an 8wt. in saltwater. Looks to be pretty light, and the composite would stand up to the saltwater as well, I just don't know if the drag is sealed. If anyone has had any experience with, or thoughts about these in salt or otherwise, I'd appreciate it.

Jeff

Meaning no disrespect...

but something about a plastic reel doesn't do it for me. But that's just my opinion - it does make sense from a corrosion pov.

I've found the Danielsson reels are, and always have been, among the elite designs and manufactured to perfection. They perform with the very best, I really love them. The reasons for their having gone out on their own are rumored but I am just glad to get the same proven reel for a phenomenal price.

I have been outfitting myself with Danielsson reels for my saltwater, Spey and all the demanding applications I face. Due to the more affordable price it's going a lot faster than I expected - but never as fast as I want

I've used the CLW 8-12 quite a bit as well as the CLW Clear 5-8. The best I can say is that they are the best composite reels I've used. When I was still a Loop dealer I would often encourage guys to get one to use as a backup when heading to the salt. The 5/8 model is too small for most bonefish applications unless you use GSP for backing. The 8-12 is probably a little big, but at around 6oz it certainly isn't too heavy. The maximum drag is minimal, but enough for bones, etc. The drag is supposedly sealed, but I don't think it is sealed to the degree that the Evotecs are. I use mine for warmwater applications. I'm going to Alaska for trophy northern pike in a month, and I'll have three of them along for that trip. I wanted to work up the nerve to use one on my annual permit trip, but I just didn't have the cojones to do it. For bones, snook, redfish, and similar fish it would be an OK investment. There are so many aluminum reels with better tolerances that are close to that price point, though, that it's tough to justify except maybe as a backup.

Thanks guys for your input,
Juro, no disrespect taken, I'm secure enough in my masculinity to fish with a composite reel . JR Sprey, good points. You know I thought of the same thing, the 5/8 may be too small, though the 8/12 might be too big, but just as you say definitely not to heavy. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered the 8/12. I figure I'll give it a shot. For $140 with shipping, if a don't like it, itís like you said, at least I'll have a decent backup reel. I'll probably be able to load it up with like 450yds of gel spun with an 8wt. line, though I probably won't need that much. I'll use it for awhile and after I save up some more cash, I'll probably get something else.
Appreciate it guys,
Jeff

LOL

Nothing to do with masculinity, if anything the black stealth or clear function before form is more masculine than the shiny titanium finish. Purely aesthetics, and that is as subjective as anything on earth. Again it makes sense from a corrosion prevention and obviously the price is unheard of.

Enjoy

One afterthought - the plastic reel foot has been known to be it's achilles heel.

I knew what you meant, I was just messing around. Yeah I think I read about this in another forum, about the foot breaking sometimes when people dropped it on the ground or something. Anyway, supposedly the one that I ordered is the 2006 model, which they addressed that issue and replaced it with a metal foot. So, hopefully, I wont have to run into that problem, but we'll see which one this flyshop sends me. Anyway, appreciate your input, have a good one,
Jeff
