River Types

What is the difference, in the rivers What is a freestone, tail water and a spring creek I'm almost sure a spring creek is a spring feed river, but not sure. If anyone can help with a little info that would be great.

Hey guy. Hope this will help you out with your question. A Freestone river has a substrate made up of rocks which have names that corespond to their size, for example (from Largest to smallest) Rip Rap , Boulders, cobbles, gravel, peastone. You are also correct in assuming that a spring creek is feed by underwater springs which keep the water temps. consistently cold throughout the seasons. A true tail water results when the dam realease comes from underneath the dam itself as opposed to over the top. this also creates a consisently cold environ for the food web in that river. Good for Salmonids! Make no mistake about it though Seasonal fisheries that reach the upper critical leathal limits of water tempertures can have tremendous fishing for trout during cold water periods such as in my beloved Housatonic. The diverse substrate (Mud,rocks, sand) and the over abundance of nutrients (nitrogen & Phosphorus) although considered limiting factors, create an insect rich habitat that is unmatched by any freestone stream. Hope this hepls Marc!
