The Originator of this fly, Bob Borden from Monroe Oregon, is also a supplier of fly tying materials. He is the owner of Hareline products. He has invented some other popular fly patters among them is the Krystal Bullet. Although this fly is not a true spey fly it is simple to tie and affective.

Charlie,

The red/blue color combination is very underused amongst steelheaders here in the PNW. Bob Arnold and Russ Miller from here in WA (yes I fish with both of them in case someone wants to know) tie marabou flies in red/blue. Bob's as a traditional marabou spider (he ties in big for winter and small for summer) and Russ in his bodiless marabou style.

I personally prefer a wing on a spey fly and so I tie one in red/blue in more traditional style. It is tied thus:

tag: gold oval tinsel
body: bright royal blue yarn dubbed
hackle: red schlappen or Whiting Spey Hackle
rib: oval gold tinsel
underwing: red & blue Krystal Flash (about 2 strands of each color)
throat: royal blue dyed guinea, teal, or mallard
wing: 2 dyed scarlet red golden pheasant rump feathers tied flat
head: fl. blue Danville's Flymaster

I also tie a variation of this with the rear half of the body made of prismatic red tinsel.
