Pays to ask first!

I've been eyeing a marsh that opens to the sea south of the train tracks close to home for the last ten years. All private land. The marsh and it's three acre cove is not large but warms quickly this time of year. As I was driving my daughter to her school dance I eyed it again and told her I wish I could fish that area someday. She said " What's stopping you?" and I explained how difficult, let alone impossible to fish areas like that and risk getting in trouble. I could have walked along the edge of the tracks and just wandered in but I would be tresspassing on Amtrak property. Not a good idea.

Nina said " Look at that house near the cut. Why don't you just go over there and ask for permission to fish out of his back yard." Nina is twelve. On the way home I pulled off Rt.1 and saw about 30 seagulls sitting in the water just outside of this small ecosystem where it enters the sea. They were plucking something out of the water and lifting their heads for the swallow. WORM Hatch!!!!!!! High tide....two warm days back to back! "That does it!" I said to myself. I took a left and headed out to the point near the opening and the home that Nina mentioned she had seen. The house on the cut was new and still under contruction but appeared to be finished on the inside. The landscaping was far from finished. At the top of the driveway sat a brand spanking new X-Type Jaguar and a S550 Benz. The stonework alone appeared to be worth more than I have earned in the past ten years. The owner was standing in the doorway of this multimillion dollar estate chating with someone. I pulled into the driveway, walked up to the house and introduced myself. And then, out of the doorway popped a man that I have know for twenty years. I've been photographing his family for him at reunions. He introduced me to the homeowner. We hit it off right away thanks to Herb and the homeowner told me to come back before dark and leave a few flies for him at the doorway. "Park right over there next to the driveway!" The spawn didn't happen that night as the tide was slacking but I managed three fish. Also looks like I have a new sight fishing spot and friend five minutes from home. Light tan sand on the ocean side and very shallow at low tide.

As I was leaving he pulled into the driveway and asked how I did and would I please come back and take him fishing. He said he has all the flyfishing equipment and waders "Just tie me more flies!" Thanks Nina! She was right. Pays to ask!!!!!!!!! This year is getting of to a Nirvana start. Thanks all out there for helping kick it into gear.

Thumbs up

Awesome story Phil, you are a natural people person and might have hit it off even without the coincidental contact! I have a few 'carte blanche' private spots that I hold in very high esteem so I can relate.

It gets better!

The homeowner invited me over to fish with him today. We went at low tide to find the holes and bars. From all counts, and real person and gentleman with one of the best playgrounds in the area right out the back door. Saw one fish. Hooked none but more importantly, a learning experience and a new friendship born. Best part? He loves bonefishing.

That's really great. Another case of it's not what you know, but who you know! Maybe he's got some waterfront property in the Bahamas with bonefish flats right off the beach....... I've always wondered if a bottle of wine and a smile can get me access to some of the water I crave throwing a line on, but that has no public access.

Another thing I've found is that a lot of times there's a public right of way to lakes that are surrounded by private land. A visit to your local town hall can easily find this out for you.
