Steelhead Fly of the week – Royal Coachman

This fly is a transplant from the east coast were it has been used for trout for as long as anyone can remember. When easterners moved west and started fishing for steelhead they took this fly with them and it has been a staple ever since. When tying this fly I like to rib it with some type of heavy wire, as the body with its floss and peacock herl can be fragile. I was told by one of our expert west coast moderators, that a good variation of the fly for summer/fall fish is to changing the floss color from red to orange or gray. Thanks Russ.

Hook: Up eye salmon hook.
Tail: Golden pheasant tippet in strands.
Body: In 3 segments, peacock herl followed by red floss followed by peacock herl.
Collar: Brown hackle.
Wing: White deer hair, polar bear, hackle tips or wing quill segments.

Another gorgeous dressing, Charlie.

Pink floss would also work in the Northwest.

Charlie,

Love the hackle tip wing variation, although I have a penchant for the original white duck quill or better yet, white goose shoulder. I always add a short tip of flat gold tinsel to mine as well and have been ribbing mine with gold wire (on small sizes) or fine oval gold for many years to increase the fly's durability. Igor is right about the pink (especially hot pink) body for steelhead here in the PNW. In fact, Walt Johnson's Lady Coachman is nothing more than a variation of the Royal Coachman, and it is very effective in the late evening on a certain S river.

Still one of my favorite flies to use. I think a lot of people forget about it these days. Works great for trout in every body of water I've ever fished, and it's a great panfish fly too.

Great looking fly! I like the metal rib. I've never used one for salmon or trout, but it is one of my favorite bass/sunny pond fly's.

Hey, I'm currently attending Weather Forcasting School at Keesler AFB in Biloxi MS. Around September I'm heading for Kodiak Island for another 4 years!

I havn't had much time to do much fishing, the school is keeping me pretty busy. I'm starting to see allot of bait fisherman in the Back Bay area and flounder gigging going on in the surf. From what I hear the water is full of fish though.
