Atlantic Salmon Fly of the week – Orange Blossom

The Originator of this fly, Carmelle Bigaouette is one of Canada’s best-known female fly tier’s. She was born in Quebec and soon after moved with her family to New Brunswick were she lived for most of her life. She started tying in 1943 and began working as a professional tier in the late 40’s. And although she never guided or fished for salmon she did learn enough from other guides, tiers and fishermen to come up with the Orange Blossom some time in the 50’s. She tied this fly to be an early season high water fly and it is still as popular today as when she invented it.

Charlie -

How does the body hackle interact with the tinsel? Does the tinsel go over the wound hackle and rib it or does the hackle lay on top of the tinsel body?

thanks

I like the design and plan to adapt it in various colors for summer steelhead.

I have some rather poor quality fox that has more brown than red in it. Works very well on this fly. I'm going to tie a set of them on tubes this year and take them "home" to the Matapedia. Had a wonderful 16 pound female clock an Irish shrimp with similar color scheme couple of years ago on that river. Looking for more of the same this year.

Well done, Charlie.

Thanks guys,

Juro, I put the hackle on over the tinsel. It is not noted in the dressing but I usually counter rib it with fine wire so it holds together better. And as for that summer steelhead thing, you may want to put that on hold. We have salmon fishing to do this summer bro!

Chris, The fox wing is a good idea. Actually, I have a coyote tail that looks to be the right color. That type of hair is more durable than bucktail anyway.

Charlie,

The Orange Blossom is another one of those salmon flies that works equally well on steelhead rivers, especially in winter or high water during summer.
