Salmon River Mini-Report April 3-4

Trying to answer several posts at once.

I am just back from the river.

Fished briefly Monday April 3. Missed meeting with guide due to technology malfunction, ( Read: dead cell phone battery.) Got late start at the upper fly only stretch. I think water at this time was 750. Not much traffic due to cold rain, but couldn't raise a fish in only about two hours swinging with the spey rod. My fishing partner took an unscheduled swim, which cut this day short. Jim reports, " Water still too cold for swimming!"

Tuesday, met Dave Barber on the river at o-dark thirty. Floated Pineville to forget where, only saw one other guide boat, and two unguided waders. Water had been doubled over night to 1,750. Weather miserable in snow and heavy winds. Had the bite for about 1 1/2 hours at one hole, nothing else. I had a 10 pounder on for about five minutes, which jumped and threw the hook. Then landed a very nice fish, followed later by my partner landing a better one, gorgeous hen, bright and about half spawned out.

All fish took a very small pink/purple/white streamer, which is made to imitate the smolts which the fish are keying on now.

Fished the spey rod for a while again, but no joy. Can't tell if I wasn't getting down to them, or not finding them, or if they just weren't eating.

I think they are cutting the water back midnight Tursday to 750, which should make fishing a lot easier.
