Opening Day on the Spey 2006

The fishing season on the River Spey started on Saturday the 11th February. Ian Smith last year’s winner of the Spey Quaich poured a bottle of Glenfarclas malt whiskey into the river. Ian looked very mournful with such a waste. The ceremonial toast was accompanied by the sound of bagpipes and a blessing of the river delivered by the Rev Elizabeth Curran
The ceremony, sponsod by Glenfarclas and Walkers of Aberlour (Bakers and shortbread makers) was held at Aberlour at 9.00 on Saturday morning. 2006’s first fish was caught within one hour by with Sandy Leith, from Keith fishing the Kineromy beat.
A fish were also caught at Tulchan D by a Tay gillie……what next? Ian Gordon’s guest Ian Clerk from Speyburn B&B landed a fish from the Long Pool at Knockando. A fourth fish was caught at Easter Elchies and the biggest of the day from Orton weighed in at 15lb.
On Monday the Carron beat got of the mark when popular co-owner Jimmy Jack of Carron lines landed a fresh fish from Dalmunich.

Malcolm,

Splendid report, thank you - sounds like a grand opening day on the Spey. I hope to someday be there to experience it firsthand!
