Kwan Fly

Question on the Kwan fly - The mono loop at the tail sounds like it doesn't just prevent fouling but somehow gives the snapping action of shrimp.
I have yet to find a decent recipe for this fly and am really putting it together from bits from different sources.

Tied hook point down
Craft fur tail marked with a sharpie to simulate segmentation.
Mono loop tied in at 45 degree angle (assuming up off the top of the shank)
Rabbit, marabou or chenelle collar at tail.
crab type body using yarn, unique fibre, etc...
bead or dumbell eyes with a weed guard in front of them.

Does anyone know just how that mono loop at the tail is suppose to be tied in, it really sound like the key to the whole pattern since it creates the snapping action.

It seems to me that the snapping tail would propel the shrimp backward with the head facing rearward. This pattern with the head forward and line pulling in that direction would go just the opposite.

Jim Simms is the Kwan king

I think he tied them both ways but i will defer to his first hand reply.

A little tan felt crab did well for me on Bahia Honda State park which is a good DIY spot. Also an unweighted snapping shrimp on Matecumbe in a honeycomb coral flat with sandy holes that the bones tailed through.

The mono loop at the bend of the hook is used to prevent the tail from fouling around the hook. Interesting thought about it enhancing the snapping action. On size 6 & 8, I don't think it is necessary since the tail is not long enough to foul.

The fly rides hook point up because of the weighted eyes on top of the shank.
Generally, at the bend there is an orange egg sac. this can be a small clump of maribou or glo-bug yarn. The body is made similar to a Merkin, e.g. alternating bands of Aunt Lydia rug yarn.

It is an interesting fly and a must in the Keys. It is said that it is used to depict, toad fish, mantis shrimp and crabs.

When I get a chance, I'll post a photo.

Jim,
Thanks for straightening me out on the pattern. I'll post a pic once I get around to tying some up.
Juro,
I plan to hit Bahia Honda looks very cool, my wife likes the hotel down that way better anyway so we'll split it 50/50 down there and Islamarada.

I have a feeling I'm going to catch the fever and will be hitting Aklins with the group in a couple years.
