Atlantic Salmon Fly of the week - Cosseboom

John C. Cosseboom of Rhode Island created this fly in 1935 while he was on the S.S. Fleuris on his way to Anricosti Island. Since that time this fly has come to be a staple in most salmon fisherman’s boxes. John believed that the red head of the fly would look like blood and trigger the fish to strike. It also happens to be the first fly I ever caught an Atlantic salmon on.

Hook: Up eye Atlantic salmon hook
Tag: Oval silver tinsel.
Tail: Light olive silk.
Body: Light olive silk.
Rib: Embossed silver tinsel.
Wing: Gray squirrel.
Hackle: Soft yellow hackle wound as a collar.
Head: Red

That's perfect Charlie,
I think you match any of the best tiers in layout and construction.
AND your original designs are pretty decent as well.

What size hook? It looks beefy for the size.

Steve,

Thanks for you generous comments, but I think you give me more credit than I deserve.

As for the hook it is an old Partridge M, size 2. The original Salmon Iron, and still one of my favorite hooks.

Very nice

This too is one of my favorites. I change the color slightly from the original by using green phentex, makes for a brilliant color in the water.

Charlie

I could stare at that picture all day. In fact I've spent far too much time at it already!

Nice
