What is the suggested weight for trout? 5 wt? Is 6 overkill? Thanks.

The weight of the rod really depends on the type of the water you will be fishing and what size fish you expect to catch. To a lesser extent, it also depends on the size and type of flies that you will be using most often.

That being said, what water types do you expect to fish? Big, open rivers and lakes, or small creeks and beaver ponds? And how big are the fish that you expect to catch?

I definately won't be fishing any big, open lakes. It's more like small rivers. Casting space isn't exactly confined, but there are alot of trees around, so very large casts are out of the question. I would also like something that could handle the occasional smallmouth.

A 5 weight is the most versatile all around rod weight IMHO. Trout, salmon, bass, carp, and most things in fresh water short of big Alaskan salmon or muskies can be caught on a 5 wt.
