need bargain spey reel advice

Hello,

I'm looking for advice/recommendations on purchasing a "bargain/inexpesive" spey reel for my Redington Redfly 12'6'' 7/8 wt spey rod. The line I've already purshased is a Airflo Delta Spey Floater WF7/8F w/poly leaders. I plan to use this combo for Great Lakes Steelhead. I want something that balances the outfit and won't break the bank. Any thoughts? Anyone have anything used they wan't to sell? email chromefinder

You might try a Teton Tioga. I have the #10 on my rod with a AirFlo Delta 6/7. For a 7/8 you will probably need the #12.

Another option is an Okuma 10/11.

The Tioga is a little more than you want to spend but is a NICE reel for the money. The Okuma will run you about $75 and is a perfectly servicable reel...

The Tioga 10 RA is the perfect size for a 12'6" Redfly. It will hold a Delta 7/8 with plenty of 20# backing. In my opinion the Tioga 12 is to heavy for that rod. As to the Okuma Integrity 10/11 it is a great reel if one is on a budget but, again in my opinion, it is also to heavy for the rod in question.

Nah, he doesn't want that one. (Because I'm bidding on it. )

Mike, I suggested the larger reel because I was only able to get a bit over a 100 yards of 30# backing and and a Delta 6/7 line on the Tioga #10. But you're right, the #10 will balance the rod MUCH better than the #12. The Okuma is the cheap, but not optimal, alternative.

FWIW I have 7/8/9 Rio WindCutters and more backing than I need on two lightweight & inexpensive fly reels, Bass Pro Gold Cup IV and TFO 425. Both reels balance fine on my 12'6" rods.
