nice, easy starting kit

I'm looking for an inexpensive rod & reel combo for us in Arkansas. That means trout on the Little Red and White Rivers, primarily, but also anything else that will take a fly. Am thinking an 8.5 with a 5 wt. Can anyone recommend a brand?
I don't want to spend too much money. But I also don't want to end up frustrated because my cheap tackle is too difficult to learn on. Thanks - Jake

Jake,

TFO, Echo, Redington (especially their RedStart combos or RedFly combos), St. Croix, G. Loomis (their combos with rod, reel, line, backing for around $180.00) all make excellent 8'6" and 9" rods that would be perfect for what you want to do.
