Maine trout and/or salters?

It looks like I'll be down east for Thanksgiving (Portland/ Saco) and I was curious if anyone has any experience fishing for trout up there. I have no idea where to begin, but I know the Mousam is a perennial favorite for stripers. I'm curious if it (or any other rivers in the area) hold 'bows or sea run browns.

I really need to wet a line, so I may just head over to the Presumpscot to see if the small mouths are still there.

Any info is much appreciated.

The Mousam holds a decent population of sea run browns, as does the ogunquit a little further south. Freshwater opportunities in the immediate Saco area are pretty limited.
If you decide to go after the salters sand eels have been working well as have shrimp patterns. The best fishing is usually right at the head of the tide where the fresh and saltwater mix. In the mousam this seems to be just a bit below rte 1. I don't know about the ogunquit, as i don't usually fish there. Both rivers have recently been stocked with mostly 12-14" fish but a few monster broodstock were reportedly put in as well.
Another good resource would be eldrege brothers flyshop in cape neddick, i'll see if i can find a number and post it later... I just found a website:

Good luck.

RE:Maine trout and/or salters?

I ran into a guy at the flyshop yesterday while xmas shopping and he was looking for pheasant tail nypmh and prince nymph materials. The Eldredge guys told him that small nymphs were working while sight fishing upriver in the Ogunquit. It's anything but automatic - listening to Steve Moore talk about anxiety of sight casting to searuns in coastal maine.

I agree with Matt's advice near tidewater, my friend caught a 3 lb salter on a kastmaster in tidewater.

They were totally off bite until the last hour of daylight, when they started to hit everything in sight. I landed one just under 24" up river in Scorton many moons ago.

The guys in Europe really know their way around "seatrout". Patagonians also have a premier searun brown fishery.

Any of you searun trout guys out there?

Thanks! I was just guessing at the Mousam. It's nice to be right every now and then I've heard of Eldridges up in that area and now I know the exact street. I'll let you know how it goes.

Juro, I believe they have stopped stocking the "Creek," but Chuck R. swears he saw them sipping bugs there last Spring. I might have to go wander down that way this weekend. But wait. Now I'm re-reading your post.... did I miss some information from Steve somewhere? Are sea runs in need of zero impact?
