Smallmouth Teaser

In poking around the web and dreaming of a trip to smallmouth country next spring I found a real interesting description of a lake in Maine that is bursting with smallies. It's about 4 miles long and about 3 1/2 hours from boston. It's in a corner of Me. that's out of the wat too. There's also a few rivers and stream nearby for the 5 wt. A small group could rent a camp or 2 that sleeps 4 for short money. Just thinking.....

is a clearwater lake with a smallmouth population that is underfished and overwhelming. We started at the southern most end of the lake, throwing some topwater baits, getting a couple of small largemouth. It wasn't until we moved north towards birch Island when we were just overloaded with smallmouth. Using a crawdad pattern crankbait caught some fat smallmouth along with pinnerbaits. At one point along this area which is along the western shore, we were catching smallmouth with literally every cast!! The spinnerbait was working great around the docks and floats while the crankbaits worked excellent along the boulders that dotted the lake bottom. We worked a jig-n-pig
in the deeper water (18 to 25ft, which worked very well. We met with similar success along the very western shore of the lake where again we found some big smallmouth around the docks and floats that lined the shore. This was by far one of the better lakes we have fished. It's smallmouth population was EXCELLENT!! These bass were very aggressive. And although the largemouth
was not as evident we can't wait to go back.

Lefty,

That lake sounds like a great place to test out the results of the warmwater fly swap.

I actually have a few connections (access to remote cabins) in Maine. Perhaps we can chat about the lake in question at the Marlboro show. I assume that you will be there?

A smallmouth clave sounds great to me. I would not mind hosting it if there is interest.

Gentlemen- I probably will not be able to make the show, but if you are planning a smallie trip in Maine I would be very interested. Like Mike, I have many connections in that state, particularly from when I was guiding some years ago. My interest is definitely piqued.

Please let me know how the planning goes and if I can help in any way.
