Advice for a beginner please

Hi
I am an experienced bonefisher and want to go to Cape Cod in June to try to catch stripers.
This will be my first ever trip for stripers.
All advice will be very welcome.

Pete

An experienced bonefisher will have no problems on cape cod in June. We'll be around to help as this is a prime time.

First: beef up. You will need a solid 9wt for the bigger flies and fish. If you fish the surf, then even a 9wt single hander is pretty whimpy.

Second: bigger flies. The little bonefish flies will work, but there's no advantage in early June. Late June is another story.

Stripping basket: You really need one for optimal coverage with longest casts and trouble free strip retrieve.

Lines: Intermediate first, sinking second. Floaters are not necessary but can be fun with poppers.

Find how to fish each tide. My rule #1 = "early and late, moving water and bait". But that being said mid-day is a hoot on the flats and it's all about the tide there.

You don't have to sight fish for stripers to have great success, but some (like myself) prefer to sight fish. With your bone background just find a good flat and go to it! Stripers in June are not brain surgery and much easier than bonefishing in the Keys.

As time comes, see if you can hook up with us local types. We should have some events in June as there are lots of folks coming to town from the Forum membership.

Fly Fishing in Saltwater Magazine

Pete,

There was an interesting article in the Jan/Feb edition of Fly Fishing in Saltwater about fishing for stripers in the bayside. If you cannot get a copy, send me your address and I will post it to you.
