Ultra-Bright Rattle Squid

Ultra-Bright Rattle Squid

Features:

Designed to gather light in low ambient and murky water conditions.
Highlights only the dominant squid characteristics and profile to create the illusion of prey movement.
Eyes are moved rearward in proportional to the squid’s profile.

Construction:

Rattle is concealed by the E-Z Body and located near the hook bend.
E-Z body flares to widen the tentacles.
Cone head negates the buoyancy of the rattle and air trapped in E-Z Body.

Eyes are epoxy and attached to each side of a mono loop.
This prevents lose of eyes and glue failure on moving materials.
Eyes are separated 3/8 inch due to the loop radius.
Size of eyes helps retain material.
Gives the fly a more three-dimensional look when seen from below.
Mono loop aids in reducing fouling.

Fab lookin' calamari Ray.

And just in time for the start of the season - it can't be that long now - can it?

Will you be at SWE in Newport on 2/19?

Here's a follow-up pic that shows more exactly the position of the eyes and the 3-D shape of the entire squid. The first picture does not truely depict the full 360 degree shape of the squid. It looks more like a flat plane fly.

Those of you that have seen the fly at the tying show know this. Hope this helps visualized the image better.

A little more informations on the construction. Several have asked about the eyes.

Here is a much clearer pic of the eye construction. You have invisioned the same questions I had too constructing this fly. 5 min epoxy was used to secure (2) 40 lb. test mono links to the eyes. The double lanyards keep the eyes in position on the hook shank and also keeps them from rolling the mono line.

This fly is a winter proto-type and hasn't had its sea trials yet. The fly's balance and material distribution is similiar to other designs, so I see no forseeable problems with its functions. The applications process of attaching eyes this way with lanyards opens many avenues for other fly patterns. Expect to explore more about this type of construction in the future.
