Question Rhea

I just received my first Rhea shipment today. They are long, heavy quilled. It seems only the terminal several inches is usable to wind around a hook as spey. I can't imagine winding the thick quill around a hook. The proximal hackle fibers look more like emu. Am I missing something here?

You need to strip the fibres from the quill, they will come off with a thin strip that is strong enough to wrap with. Soak the feathers for a few hours (a drop of synthrapol or hair conditioner in the water will help) then grasp about a half inch of fibres close to the quill where it starts getting to thick to wrap, pull firmly towards the thick butt of the feather and the fibres should come off with a thin strip of "skin".
Happy tying - post some shots!

if your palmering the rhea do not forget to counter rib or the steelhead will destroy your fly.

Rambo,

You can get them from one of our sponsors, River Run Anglers. They are great people to deal with and will go out of their way to help you.

www.speyshop.com

The other sponsors are great too. Give them a call.

Charlie.

the quills i have are 6-10 inches and are .27 cents and the 12-22 inch quills are $1.60. the smaller quills are not thick quilled and are easier to tie, imho.

Thanks for the info to all who shared. Will you split those quills from the very top, or will you use the tip and wrap unstripped until it gets too thick. Do you use the very lowests hackles as hackles, ie do you strip the quill all the way to the butt and use as wrapped hackle?
Loophitech, can you pm me with the website or post it? Thanks.

i wrap from the tip back and then strip the rest towards the back as mentioned above in one of the other posts.

I use the unstriped tip as well as stripping off the rest(the whole way to the butt) as hackle - the shorter butt area I use sparsely in mini speys or combine it in marabou flies to get more play out of the marabou.

i was just goofing around with the rhea i received and found it easy to "peel" the barbs when the quill gets to big tie on. nice and easy! i hope all that get some from the site provided will give their feedback as well.
