Should I bring the fly rod?

Hi there folks.

My girlfriend and I just booked a trip to Costa Rica for the first week of March. This should be a nice respite from the -30 celsius here at the moment. I have reviewed alot of information on this forum, and elsewhere on the www. Most fly fishing in Costa Rica seems to be done along the Caribbean side, especially on the rivers, for tarpon and snook. I hear there are lots of crocs and snakes in this area too. Getting your leg chewed off really spoils the day. Unfortunately, we can't afford the price tag for the guided days ($350USD or so), so we are hoping to find some areas that may be accessible for do it yourselfers. The best option I've seen so far is to bus it up to Managua, Nicaragua, and fly out to the islands to do some flats fishing for bones. However, I haven't figured out how logistically easy this option would be and how long it would take.

Any input is welcome. Thanks in advance.

general thought

Just a general thought...I know nothing of Costa Rica.

I have never been unhappy having the chance to wet a line in a foreign place. The thrill of discovering and perhaps catching fish is ALWAYS worth it.

If you have ever been in a situation of having a trout stream packed with risers behind your B+B or stayed at a beach house and SEEN the pods of fish from your bedroom window...AND HAD NO FLY ROD...well, you be the judge of your own sanity at that point.

Most importantly, I always take a rod a few line sizes bigger than I think I might need (in my case, always my Atlantis when SWFF).
