2004 UK Atlantic Salmon Run

Just a thoguth on the salmon runs experienced this year .

I have been a keen salmon fisher since the early 1990's, and this year is the first time I have read through all the advertised fishing reports (T&S) and found nearly all the rivers in the UK to be having some of the best salmon runs in decades, and in some cases, the best years on record.

Is this a one off or a start of things to come?

I know there have been a number of off shore nets bought out in the last year or so, and hatcheries have been introduced on numerous systems. Is this the answer to our progress or is just nature comming round full circle to benifit the atlantic salmon once again?

I hope it is a sign of improvement rather than just a blip.

Spey catch in 2004 was a pleasing 9850 salmon, the best for several years, but the sea trout catch was around 3000 in line with the last year or two but down from the 4000 of the recent past.
Salmon catch & release for the whole season was 68% cf 70% in 2003, but of course the numbers released were greater as a result of the much increased catch.

I think the Tweed hope to better or at least equall last years record around the 13500 region

Have you the Ness figures?

I know the club water totaled 450 or so for the year. This is some going considering it was only a few years ago the total was only 58
Due to high water levels the some private beats faired better than others, but I know numbers were all around or above average for the year.

Loch ness on the other hand has had its best year in over a decade.

Another club water I fish on the conon, totaled 160+for the season and this was with a one fish a day limit, leave the river, regardless of releaing the fish or not. In the 1990's their 5 yr average was only 38 fish, and this was at a time where no catch limitations applied.

Good to see such improvments!!
