Building a Fly Rod

As the winter months draw near, I am pondering the Idea of building a rod this winter. I am semi-decent at making flies and I feel that I should be able to complete the task. I was wondering where to go to find a quality blank at a decent price. Since I am probably going to screw this up, I don't want to spend too much money, but on the off chance that I may succed, I would like it to be fairly decent. I am leaning towards 4 pc, unless you guys think that is a little ambitious. Any suggestions out there? Components as well, who makes good ones and where can I get them?

RE:Building a Fly Rod

Start with Smitty. The Rod builder's workshop in Kingston MA is the home of one of the most ornery, nasty, to-the-point curmudgeons on the atlantic seaboard - but don't tell him I said that!

Seriously, Smitty has been building rods for as long as some of us have been out of diapers and he is a master.

Call him at 781 582-1015 or better yet, a bunch of us should meet down there to sniff glue (rod building joke).

I am also thinking about this as a winter project.

Anyone else?

Juro,
A group meeting would be a great way to get together this winter. I would be up for that! Thanks for the heads up.

RE:Building a Fly Rod

Nate, I am not trying to take away from Juro's suggestion. You might look around for some of the flyfishing sites that have rod building, there is a good one in NY, but I had a computer crash, and lost the URL. Cabella's has a good flyfishing catalog, which has rod building supplies. I personally have built rods since about 1960. Most rods that I fish today I have built myself. Anytime anyone wants some help I will do my best to help. You do not need much equipment to build a rod, a bobbin, a large round file. I find one of the hardest things is opening up the cork handle, and the reel seat. Nate great response to Tom Meade.

RE:Building a Fly Rod

Well, I finally got my rod. I ended up going with a Cabela's FT 9ft 9wt 4pc rod. I now have to head down to Smitty's and get some supplies, thread and whatnot. I am glad tomorrow is Saturday!

RE:Building a Fly Rod

Too bad I joined this late or maybe I could have been of some help.
There is a man by the name of Tom White out of either Texas or Florida who sells IM6 GLoomis blanks on Ebay for around $30 or so dollars.
I have always wanted to grab one to build myself a decent 4 weight.
Maybe someone else will benefit from this post.

RE:Building a Fly Rod

For those with the means(I am not such a person), I stumbled across this while at my in-laws house in Winchester, VA.

http://www.shentel.net/canerod/HTML/ClassIndex.html

The Shenandoah Rod Company offers cane rod building classes. The cost of the class includes the finished product. Finished rod in hand you can put it through it's paces on the Shenandoah river, fishing for smallmouths.

At the very least, this would be a rewarding experience, especially for the purist.
