Cell Phones and Fishing

I just got my cell phone hooked up to the wireless web, and I have started to use it more and more. The other day I checked my hotmail account on the beach in order to review some pointers that Juro had emailed me. Well, I got to thinking that it would be nice if I could get tide info from web as well. I can't seem to find a site that allows you to do this. I even had the great idea that the cell phone provider could give you tides for your exact location as well. I am probably just dreaming, but I figured I would ask around and see if anyone knows of a site like this. For all you Palm owners out there here is a link to a tide table for it. I got it from the other board.

Juro, if you can figure out how to program WAP pages, more power too you. I will investigate as well. You don't have to do all the work. If this actually works out, it will be pretty sweet.

Wireless is going that way, in fact with geopositioning added to cell phones (which will probably be going thru some big transformations over the next few years) there is no reason why the phone can't suggest things to you as you fish.

"beep-beep... with tide levels and barometric pressure where you are, the trend is for large migrating stripers to be frequenting the area 300 yards to the southeast."

Either that or...

"beep-beep... Fresh striper fillets on sale at Stop and Shop, only 5.99 / pound. Take a left on Main..."

RE:Cell Phones and Fishing

Forget WAP programming.

Start off with a simplified Web page that would allow existing WAP servers to display meaningful chunks of content from the site to cell phone and Palm users. The frames layout is counter productive to that. I'm not saying dump frames. Simply create a short page that has links to all the key components:

<!--http--><a href="http://flyfishingforum.com/flytalk/index.htm" target="_blank">Fly talk</a><!--url-->

<!--http--><a href="http://flyfishingforum.com/expertise/index.htm" target="_blank">Expertise</a><!--url-->

<!--http--><a href="http://flyfishingforum.com/chronicles/index.htm" target="_blank">Chronicles</a><!--url-->

<!--http--><a href="http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/sitesel.html" target="_blank">World tides</a><!--url-->

etc.

and stick this at http://flyfishingforum.com/mobile/

Tide data is so important (Jim actually has a watch that gives him this info). I can't tell you how many times I've found myself indecisive over what to do or where to try next because I'm not sure what tide is going to do in a certain spot. It would be incredible to have this available on my cell phone!

RE:Cell Phones and Fishing

Al,
Since I don't really understand how WAP works, can my WAP phone access a basic web site? I was under the impression that it can't. I thought the sight had to be WAP enabled. The other problem then arises in that if the Tide Page is not in a format I can read, the link seems useless. I am not a computer programmer nor do I pretend to be one, so I may be way off. I think that this would be awesome as an add on to this site, and I would love to do a little learning this winter. I get so much useful information from this page and I never really know what to give back, since I am not a great writer. Well, maybe this would be it. I would love to help out any investigation into this topic, I just need a little direction. Anyone else want to give this a real try?
Nick

RE:Cell Phones and Fishing

A WAP gateway is a translation layer that converts straight up HTML (Hyper Text Markup Lanaguage, i.e. web pages) to the compressed byte code of WML (Wireless Markup Lanaguage) needed to display on most hand held devices. Your cell phone can access any Web site that has been routed through a WAP gateway.

Most mobile providers have a comprehensive WAP gateway that has scoured the Web and done the needed translation. The problem here is that the mobile provider usually limits gateway routing to those sites that meet with their approval, i.e. those that are navigable within the confines of a 4" x 4" display screen. This makes sense since translating a page that was designed for a 17" computer monitor is a waste of time for everyone involved.

So if your provider does not provide access to the Forum, it may be because we do not have a WAP device friendly page. Hence my suggestion that we come up with one.

It's my feeling that Web servers and WAP gateways will become integrated in the next few years or even months, so any effort to set up our own WAP gateway will only serve a meaningful purpose within a limited time window. I think our efforts would be better spent slimming down the existing pages and registering the URLs for them with big name mobile providers.

RE:Cell Phones and Fishing

It is my understanding that digital pathways servers provide on the fly translation of any web page. Frames present a challenge for the user but once you figure out what frame is your target it's not so bad. Check out the link earlier in this thread to digitalpathways.com.
