Guys, what's the best and cheapest source for tyer's grade jungle cock? I ain't making presentation flies.

I've seen capes as low as the $60 range, but am unsure.

Simple for folks like yourself who live in the US, it is Canada; however, it is illegal to bring it back across the border into the US unless you have proof it was domestically raised and you also have the CITIES license needed in your possession.

Otherwise, you will have to rely on EBay and take your chances to get jugle cock in the US for less than $100.00.

Me, I only buy stuff that is legal here in the US, so I don't even consider making the 1 hour drive to BC from my home to get the cheap (and illegal in the US) necks. There is a potential $10,000.00 US fine for each undocumented neck you bring accross the border.

CITES

The whole CITES thing is weird, because that guy in England who runs fishermansfeathers doesn't seem to ship with a CITES document.

Maybe I don't understand.

best and thanks-

Joe

Joe,
The best US source in my experience is Castle Arms (MA). They always have a wide range of grades on hand, from $60-180 or so. Reputable folks, satisfaction is guaranteed. Google will get you there.
cheers,
John

Joe,

Until very recently (about 6months ago I think) Fisherman's Feathers required you to purchase a CITIES license for jungle cock and other feathers they sell on the CITIES list; however, they now have a US outlet/shipping distributor that has the CITIES licenses (a different one is needed for each different bird or animal on the list) for the feathers they sell in the US. This is why they no longer require US customers to buy the CITIES license for purchases.

At the recent Wilmington MA show, I was able to score a grade A cape for 50% off, or $ 62.50. It is in a package marked, " Fishermen's Feathers." Wish I could tell you the name of the shop, does anyone else remember? I'm pretty sure they are the US distributor.............

The flyfishing Forum has the CITIES certificate for the import of Jungle Cock to the US directly from Fishermans' Feathers. I am not sure if these things expire, but we did a large group purchase in the past the the quality of what we received was phenomenal.

I/we would be willing to do that again provided our cert is valid. Someone else would have to volunteer to do collection and distribution, I will not have time to deliver on such a task as I am well over-subscribed as it is currently.

If anyone would like to meister a JC purchase, I will contact FF in the UK to get things rolling. Let me know.

Juro -

I kicked myself for missing out on that last jungle cock bulk purchase. Count me in if you do it again. Maybe a separate thread in order to build interest? Thanks in advance.

Jay

Juro,

To the best of my knowledge, a CITIES permit for a particular species has not expiration date.

I would also like to be in on the next bulk purchase if the group does this again. Please PM me if anyone here organizes one. I'd also be willing to help make it happen in any way I can help.

Count me in if anyone wants to put an order together!

Looks like there are already about 4 or 5 of us who are ready to buy some JC.

Did anyone split a neck last time? How did that work out?

Although i would love to coordinate this purchase i simply will not have the extra time for the next few months.

PM or e-mail me if anyone puts this together...

Matt

MattS,

Spliting a jungle cock neck is not a good idea unless you split it so one person gets all the large feathers and the other one gets all the small feathers. The reason for this is the feathers on each side of the neck are curved either to the left of right depending on which side they are found. Remember, it takes a left and a right side feather to properly "cheek" or add jucgle cock eyes to a fly. If you don't use a left and a right feather to do this, one will cock down (or up) while the other one lays properly.
