Last Laugh at South Beach

Ok, who has been guilty of this one?
We have all done it.

Making fun of those who choose to just stand and fish at the South Beach Drop off. Come on, you know who you are?

Well today one of those people gets the last laugh. A gentlemen landed a 40" pig of a striper there today. He got off the boat at 8 and never moved till he left at 2. His friends told me the whole story and the kids face said it all on the ride back to the refuge.

The bad news, we all have pie on our face. The good news the big ones are here. Quite a few big fish coming up from Morris Island and more seen today in the surf at South Beach. Also saw some scales on the stairs this morning at the refuge.

Other than that, today was another schoolie bonanza. From 12 till 4 the place was popping. Everyone got about 20-30 fish on South Beach and I got board at the end of Morris Island after a half hour of none stop every cast action. The guys today did well in the calm surf and from the drop off south to "J".

Hang in there the weekend is coming!

Capt Keith

80 or more percent of anything in the tub goes through the north channel from Nantucket Sound when the water is at these cold spring levels. It's been the rare pod (with a few exceptional days) that rides the flood in from the inlet in temps less than 50 degrees. I believe that the vast majority come in from the west into the refuge waters, unless they are running the cold deep channel and I am not seeing them. Lately with the cold temps many have taken the Stage Hbr turn to find comfortable conditions, but they won't stay as the urge pulls them onward when the next flood comes (fishing has been good up inside lately).

The question is simply what tide do they come over the north-end flats and whether there is a good enough shoreline migration on the Soundside that day happening. Migration being what it is, every day is a bit of a crapshoot as the feast and famine on the outside beaches demonstrate each spring and fall. But the likelihood of hitting the jackpot is high and big fish are arriving in numbers.

Judging by the success on Morris lately it's a no-brainer to fish the North Channel and you can bet it's my next destination.
