5/11 South Beach

Took the admiral out fishing today. Found a lot of fish around south beach, but they were deep. Low tide fishing the drop offs from the Rosa Rogussa to the "J" bouy every fish was taken about 1 foot off the bottom. Did not see to many many taken on the fly today. I don't think the few guys out there were getting them down enough. I started out with Slugos and got nothing. Switched to a heavier weighted Storm shad, and every cast, once we cleared the drop off of the beach, would be a hook up. Fish were all tight to the shelf of the drop offs. Fish also showing close to the bottom on the recorder. Something to keep in mind if anyone is coming down this weekend.

Fish were all between 20-26" for us today. Water temp was 56.8 most of the way along the beach. Air Temp was 76, with SW at 10-15, so between the two the water temp should be warming up a bit quicker this week.

Thanks for the update Keith. I will probably see you Saturday morning as well with the wife.

Sounds like there are many fish to be taken. Things seem to have started much earlier then last year.

Keith,

Are you running weekdays yet? I'm hoping to fish Mon-Weds next week.

Thanks,

Dave

Keith -

Please leave the boat moored all of next week. I don't want Big Dave having the place to himself without a death march

Seriously, when the shuttle runs daily it's time to forget about this horrendous winter we just had and indulge. Good luck next week Dave.

BTW - we need some live blues guitar at the spring clave.

Juro,

All that walking cuts into the fishing time!

Will bring the guitar with me. I'll play - you sing. Deal? :hehe:

Talking Thought you liked yesterdays report?!

Big Dave I will get you out there next week there will probably be some other interested parties, I'm sure.

As far as today's report, I feel really bad doing this, but remember you asked for it.

Conditions were FAC with good light most of the day, till the haze took over, and the place was BUSTING. There were schoolies breaking from the tip of South Beach to the bathtub and from the bottom of the stairs to Stage Harbor entrance. You did not even have to reel, twitch or even set the hook, they did it all for you! As soon as what ever you were throwing hit the water, you were hooked up!. This major migration into the southway lasted ALL day. There were still pods of fish showing on top when I left the boat at 5:30pm. Ran into one of my regulars and he had two keepers this morning at the bottom of the stairs just north of my moorings and the same fish conditions at 5:00am.
You just can't believe the channel at the end of South Beach, it looked like a herring run with all the schoolies running in against the out going tide. It was nuts!!!

Last note and I will leave you to your list of four letter words for me. Fish were chasing schools of very small 1/4-1/2" bait. Hard to see of what from the boat other than they were mostly black looking down on them.

Sorry to rub it in, while your all at your real jobs, unlike mine.

Admiral Ed's dog could sing better than I! :eyecrazy:

I know what you mean about the walkin' time, looks like we won't have to do all that much based on Keith's report

PS Keith you are killin' me!

Question for Kieth, et al.

As I recall, they were going to put up a gate at the refuge and shut off access at night. Did this happen and if so, what time does the gate open in the morning?

New Refuge gate

The gate will be closed from 7pm- 7am. If you get in before 7 pm you will not be locked in, it will open automaticly when you pull up from the inside. If you get there after 7 pm, you can park on the causeway and walk through the side of the gate. The gate is up but I am not sure if it is operational as of yet. For any other questions or comments on the gate you can contact Mike Brady the refuge manager at 508-945-0594.
