New flyfishing books

I'm looking for some new flyfishing books to read. Any recommendations? Bear in mind that I fish for just about everything but steelhead and Atlantic salmon, and like to read about technique, destinations, and essays.

Thanks for any input.

Have you heard of "fly fishing British Columbia" ? It's a collection of chapters edited by Bob Jones, past editor of BC outdoos mag. Each chapter is on a different region of the province and by a different author. Guys like Rory Glennie and Martin Lamont. I enjoyed it , it's very informative.

Juro, I've picked that book up more than a few times in the shop and have been impressed by the photography alone. But I always get sticker shock. Methinks I should shop around and continue to pursue that book.

NI, what kind of fishing are we talking about in BC? If it's up my alley, I'd love to look into it.

If you're into trout fishing - Anything by Gierach. Sex Death and Flyfishing is my favorite. Collection of very entertaining short stories by a seasoned angler. Paperback fit's nicely into a backpack if you're on the road...

Roger Hill

Roger Hill wrote a little book on Flyfishing the South Platte river. You may not have heard of it but it is full of advice that applies to many of the rivers we fish. In fact the only other book that has had as big an influence on the way I fish is Nemes book on soft hackles. Along the lines of bonfishing Dick Browns book is packed full of information without the pretty pictures at 1/4 the price of Kaufmanns.

Hi Dbl Haul

The book was designed as a gude for BC fly angling. It covers all game fish by territory. With special attention to steelhead and coastal salmon. I may have the title slightly wrong as I gave my copy to my uncle last summer [close to it's release date] It is a "Outdorr Writers of Canada" enterprise.

If you are interested i could probably get some autographs in a copy, a few of the guys are friends of mine.

North Island, thank you for the generous offer. Since the majority of the book seems to be about steelhead and coastal salmon (refer to my first post), I will respectfully decline. But thank you anyway.

I guess somebody needs to get me hooked up with a steelhead...maybe then I'll change my mind...(how's that for a shameless request???)....

Jim McLellan has written several execellent books about the Bow and southern Alberta fisheries. You can look them over when you visit and maybe buy them if you like them?
He has lots of good stories to go along with tech details.

I picked up one of Jack Samson's books a few years ago. "Saltwater Flyfishing".

Each chapter covered a different saltwater gamefish and is full of his personal experiences and anecdotal gems. Highly recommended.

I just posted this into the Warmwater Forum, but figure it's relevant here as well...

For those of you who have already read Barry Reynold's Pike on the Fly, he has another book out in 2004. This one is titled Mastering Pike on the Fly, and I can only assume that it delves even further into the same subject as his first book.

Gonna have to get that one.

Fly Fishing Book

There is a collection of short stories called "Into The Backing" edited by Lamar Underwood that I read this past winter. It has a lot of great stories and all are apparently true. The writers are the best...John Gierach, Zane Grey,Ernest Hemingway, Lee Wulff and many others. This is not a new book; it was published in 2001. It is great for a vacation or some light reading each night. The stories are not only written well but they are also educational.

Regards,
Frank

Do a search on books by Christopher Camuto, his first book, "A Fly Fishermans Blue Ridge" was absolutely great. Its a book that explains not "how" but, "why" we fish and enjoy the outdoors.

Can't go wrong with anything by: Harry Middleton
The Earth Is Enough****
The Starlight Creek Angling Society*****
On The Spine Of Time****
Rivers Of Memory***
Bright Country**

Good luck.
