Spring Boat Maintenance?

What are the things people do to prepare their boat at the start of spring? What is the best way to burn of the fogging oil? Should you start the motor with the old plugs and then change them after you burn the fogging oil off?

Ask Pete, he has some secret solution/ formula for burning off the foggin oil that cleans off your plugs as well.

the smoke stops or the engine starts throwing parts...

Then again...
If you upgrade to a new motor ever Fall, you'll never have to deal with clearing that unsightly fogging oil...

Craig,
I start it and smoke out the neighbors, blast it with engine tuner give it 10-12 hours and run it on the old plugs in the harbor for 1/2 hour. I have already replaced the water separator/filter in the fall. I put the new plugs in after all the junk is blown out. Not a bad idea to bring fresh plugs out on the 1/2 hour voyage just in case the old ones foul up.

I suggest checking with a dealer for specifics procedures for your engine.

I use the OMC product because it screws right onto the primer valve and there is no need to hit each cylinder individually.

All screwing around aside...

Last year was my first with my own so I ran off the old spark plugs for a trip or two and then replaced them.

I got a little electrical work done this weeked. Powered up the chartplotter & reviewed the boats last trip (not mine) down in NC.

Before I lower the trailer off the blocks:
1. Fill the tires and check pressure for any leaks, pull & re-lube bearings.
2. Check brakes, make sure they're free, check brake fluid & top off
3. Break loose each weel nut & re-tighten so I know I can get them off if I need to.

Take trailer off blocks & replace wobble rollers on trailer that HAVE to be replaced.

Install trim tabs

Have rocket launchers welded on

Clean & seal all electrical connections

Replace fuel filter

No leaning post this year - maybe mid season

I have every intention of waxing the hull but I doubt if that will really get done right.

Speaking of cleaning and sealing electrical connections.

While installing the wiring for the gps I noticed a bit of corrosion on some some of the wiring, not bad but I better get brushing. I remember Penguin mentioned using one of the crc products for rust prevention. I think This is it

Spring Start up

I will usually change all the fuel filters in the fall and then I use to run the boat for a day or two, then change the plugs. BUT, if you can afford the money your engine should see a qualified mechanic once a year. Especially if your running any of the new technology out there. I now find myself doing my own winterizations on all three boats, but bring them to the Yamaha mechanic in the spring.
If you find a good company like I have at Nauset Marine, there bill has everything listed they did on the boat ,so there is no question on the billing. I find on average it is about $3-500 for the spring start up for a F225. There is a lot more to be done on todays motors than just plugs and filters. Remember, little things like your control cables need to be adjusted never mind idle control and valves (for the four strokes) and if your using the boats on the flats, like we do in Chatham, you MUST change your water pump every spring. With an initial investment of $18000 for a F225, that $500 bill once a year isn't looking to bad.

Stuff you can and should do.
fill and charge your batteries, clean all terminals on batteries and wires to those batteries with a wire brush. Check, no really, undo your bilge pump and make sure the paddle is free of debris and test your float switch and manual switch. Three miles out is not the time to find out your bilge pump only makes noise. Wash and wax your gel coat and wax more than once a year, if you can. $5000 for a paint job vs $10 for wax and 2 hrs time. If your boat bottom is painted sand and repaint to save on fuel. And last but not least GREASE the hell out of those fittings.

Happy boating and remember boating is not a cheap sport.
