Keys Baitfish

I'm going to be at Bahia Honda at the end of September, fishing for whatever will bite. I'm a first-timer in Florida and was wondering if I could get any recommendations on baitfish patterns?

Thanks in advance,

Bahia Honda! One of my favorite places on this green earth.

You will need a good selection of bonefish flies for some very smart (but BIG) bones that cruise the flats on the south side near the campsites (easy to wade), and up around on the north (hard to reach on foot). Gotchas, small crabs, shrimp, the best ties you can find or make.

Permit might be on the agenda for you, make sure you have the crab fly potpourri in the box.

For fun tie up some 'cuda flies with nylon mesh tubing or a long epoxy body, etc. Something you can move quickly enough to get their attention, poppers will probably fo the trick as well. Wire required.

Tarpon flies, some pilchard patterns like Page's bigeye baitfish would be handy for snook, etc.

I just stayed focused on bonefish the four times I have been there, although I did see permit tails they laughed at my offerings.

I landed a nice bone at Bahia Honda. Stop in and chat with Bonefish Bob, tell him the guys on the flyfishing forum sent you.

Rent a kayak and explore a little to see the lay of the land.

Good luck!

IF you can, check out Dick Browns book on Bonefish flies...not only does he show 150 flies but he also shows fly boxes set up for various locations and what he considers from his research and first hand accounts on what flies should be in the box at those different locations...Finally...if you search back in this forum you will see that I tied 130 of Brown's 150 with locations and tying materials list...along with a photo of the finished fly.
